KC Water: Tap water taste change due to runoff, still safe to drink

Jul 01, 2025Jul 01, 2025

KC Water says recent issues about tap water taste and odor are the result of seasonal runoff into the Missouri River, but the water remains safe to drink.

Heavy rainfall north of the metro is impacting the flavor and smell of treated water.

According to KC Water, its lab teams are monitoring conditions, and treatment plant staff have made adjustments to manage the issue.

Officials said this type of seasonal change is common and typically resolves within days, depending on weather upstream in the Missouri River Basin.

KC Water said in a statement that the city’s drinking water continues to meet all state and federal safety standards.
